Make Your Own Organic Deodorant

A few years ago, I began paying more attention to the ingredients in my personal care items and learned some shocking facts about antiperspirant. Antiperspirants products stop underarm odor because they stop you from sweating. Their ingredients cause skin cells to swell until they block the ducts that release sweat.

Deodorants are jam-packed full of toxins. Yes, toxins are everywhere, but the amount of nasty chemicals in conventional deodorant is scary. Chemicals can be absorbed via the skin and enter directly into the bloodstream and lymph nodes. The chemicals in deodorant can also act as endocrine disruptors which essentially means these chemicals can disrupt the function of the body's developmental hormones and reproductive system. Parabens such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl, and butyl are commonly found in deodorant. These ingredients have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.

Here is a list of ingredients in conventional deodorant that you should avoid:

  • Parabens: methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl, and butyl.
  • Aluminum compounds: Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly.
  • Silica
  • Triclosan
  • Talc
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Steareth-n
  • Fragrances

I’ve tried countless lines of store deodorants, and they always leave me stinky and sweaty. For that reason, I´ve decided to make my own homemade deodorant.

That’s why I’m so excited to share this recipe with you the best organic deodorant…

In my homemade deodorant recipe, all I use are simple, natural, safe ingredients that are known to be odor absorbers, antibacterial and antimicrobial. Great natural deodorant for sensitive skin. And guess what? It totally works!

All you need are these ingredients:

  • Baking soda
  • Organic arrowroot powder
  • Organic unrefined coconut oil
  • Essential oils

Mix baking soda and arrowroot together. Next, add the coconut and essential oils and mix well. Pour into clean airtight jar (Homemade deodorant will last 3-6 months in an airtight container). Use a popsicle stick to get the deodorant out of the container and transfer to your finger. Make sure you use enough under your arms to keep you “sure” all day long.

This deodorant change consistency depending on the temperature. In cold climates, it can we pretty hard to get out. If that’s the case for you, I recommend storing it by the shower and allowing the steam to warm it before applying. If you live in a warm climate and the deodorant is too liquid, you can store it in a cooler pantry to thicken it up.

Keep in mind that this is not an antiperspirant. But that’s a good thing. You need to sweat. It’s one of the ways your body naturally detoxes. Besides, antiperspirant just clogs your pores to keep the sweat from coming out, but your body will keep trying to detox. That’s why antiperspirant leaves those “pit stain” on your favorite shirt. It’s like your armpit threw up the chemical junk. Gross.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and share it with your family and friends.
